Ontario Lets AI Referee Its EV Charging Traffic

Four Ontario utilities adopt BluWave-ai's platform to manage EV charging load as adoption climbs.

Four Ontario utilities just handed grid traffic control to an algorithm. BluWave-ai has launched a province-wide artificial intelligence project with Oshawa Power, Oakville Hydro, Enova Power and Essex Powerlines to manage electric vehicle charging load on the distribution grid.

The utilities are deploying BluWave's EV Everywhere platform to balance substation and transformer loads locally, while also supporting broader grid stability for the Independent Electricity System Operator. It builds on a prior production-scale deployment across Canada.

Behind it sits a patent portfolio that has grown to 15 granted patents, with more than 60 filed internationally. The platform orchestrates vehicle-to-cloud telemetry across brands including Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, GM and Ford, letting utilities pause or adjust active charging sessions during localized congestion instead of relying solely on physical upgrades.

Timing matters here. Ontario's EV count is projected to grow from roughly 300,000 today to 500,000 by 2029, and founder and chief executive Devashish Paul says the software lets utilities defer capital spending on grid upgrades while smoothing demand peaks that intensify as EV charging and data center construction both add load to the same networks.

Utilities facing years-long interconnection queues need options that do not require waiting on physical grid reinforcement. Software-based load management offers exactly that, and as more Canadian utilities look to copy the model, managed charging is emerging as a near-term substitute for infrastructure spending rather than a permanent one.
